چکیده

The accuracy of the group-velocity description of dispersive pulse propagation in a double-resonance Lorentz model dielectric is shown to decrease monotonically as the propagation distance increases, whereas the accuracy of the asymptotic description increases monotonically as the propagation distance increases above a single absorption depth in the medium at the pulse carrier frequency. © 1999 Optical Society of America [S0740-3224(99)03009-X] OCIS codes: 320.5550, 320.2250, 260.2030.

Pulse centroid velocity of the Poynting vector.

The evolution of the pulse centroid velocity of the Poynting vector for both ultrawideband rectangular and ultrashort Gaussian envelope pulses is presented as a function of the propagation distance in a dispersive, absorptive dielectric material. The index of refraction of the material is described by the Lorentz-Lorenz formula in which a single-resonance Lorentz model is used to describe the m...

Energy-velocity description of pulse propagation in absorbing, dispersive dielectrics

The evolution of an electromagnetic pulse propagating through a linear, dispersive, and absorbing dielectric (as predicted by the modern asymptotic extension of the classic theory of Sommerfeld and Brillouin) is described in physical terms. The description is similar to the group-velocity description known for plane-wave pulses propagating through lossless, gainless, dispersive media but with t...

Physical significance of the group velocity in dispersive, ultrashort gaussian pulse dynamics

The properties of ultrashort gaussian pulse propagation in a dispersive, attenuative medium are reviewed with emphasis on the pulse velocity. Of particular interest is the group velocity whose physical interpretation loses meaning in causally dispersive materials as the temporal pulse width decreases into the ultrashort pulse regime. A generalized definition of the group velocity that applies t...

Generalized asymptotic description of the propagated field dynamics in Gaussian pulse propagation in a linear, causally dispersive medium

As the initial pulse envelope width of an input Gaussian pulse-modulated harmonic wave is increased above the characteristic relaxation time of a single resonance Lorentz model dielectric, the classical asymptotic description of the propagated field becomes increasingly inaccurate at a fixed propagation distance and must then be generalized in order to become uniformly valid with respect to the...

Dispersive pulse dynamics and associated pulse velocity measures

The classical theory of dispersive signal propagation by Sommerfeld and Brillouin proposed in 1914 provided the first proof within the classical Maxwell–Lorentz theory that an electromagnetic signal could not propagate faster than the vacuum speed of light in a causal dielectric, also introducing the signal velocity and the precursor fields (or forerunners). Modern asymptotic theory has extende...
